Sports

Growing up, I wanted to be a sportswriter.

I’ve been an occasional sports editor throughout my journalism career, even earning a column in Iowa City. It’s easy to get lost in sports. Through the early years of this site, you’ll find post after post devoted to my favorites and sports at large.

But a funny thing happened last year when I tried to devote my blog to the Indianapolis Colts.

I discovered I’m not a great sportswriter. I’m not even a great sports blogger. It’s not what I want to do; it never has been. I’ve left sports editing jobs. I left behind a column. I’m not above sports – heaven knows, I’ll continue to write, and some of my favorite writers are sportswriters. It’s just not, well, enough.

That’s the sports conundrum. The great ones must invent and reinvent to keep their angles fresh and perspectives clean. The bad ones (read: me) simply regurgitate the same stuff time and again. And I’m not that person.

So you’ll still find plenty of sports at MFG. Even now, I’ve devoted hundreds of words simply to rationalize my marginalization of a favorite pastime. (You can tell I’m now in business by all the “ize” words.)

When I do talk sports, I often talk about my favorites. Browse my thoughts if you like.
