Writing

Some of my favorites and yours.

Radio vs. Podcast. A longtime little, I explore The Tony Kornheiser show’s curious decision to alienate its national listener base in May 2011.

Father’s Day. My posthumous tribute to a familiar voice, my father, who died of cancer in April 2010.

Oh so serious. A longtime Batmanophile, I eagerly awaited Heath Ledger’s incarnation of The Joker. In the wake of Ledger’s death, I discussed the role and his commitment.

Fame, Death, Music, Us. An essay comparing legacies of musical icons Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson.

Bad Wrap. Clearly I’m humble, because at least I admit to failing – epically – at gift-wrapping each and every year.

Cleveland, 1987. As a child, I was lucky enough to be marooned in Cleveland with my grandparents on a cross-country trip. Don’t worry, I’m not a sportswriter. I’m not showering Cleveland with pity.

Sophie’s Story. How do you find a lost cat? A complete, detailed personal account of a search for Sophie, who disappeared for nearly a month in 2010.

The Syracuse vs. Iowa Conundrum. I’ve wrestled with sports bigamy for years; and as a result, I have two favorite college programs. Trivial, yes, but so is college fandom.

I wouldn’t get the wrong idea. Even though death or loss inspired four of my best essays, I’m not totally morose. At least not any more than necessary.

Trust me, you can browse through my archives and find much more pithy stuff. Go back as far as you want, but I warn you, some of those early sports-centric posts are a little dicey. They’re part of history, I guess.
