Why is charging for the podcasts an impossibility?
I’d certainly pay an annual subscription fee to get access to the same day it airs.

Dude, I just read this – first time to your blog. And now you’ve got me in tears. I lost my dad almost 3 years ago. Different situation, but bottom line is that the voice isn’t there anymore.

Agree totally. The delay in podcast doesn’t spur podcast listeners to rearrange schedules and listen on-air.

Instead, it likely results in less listeners per podcast, who don’t want to suffer through the lag. Either way, I think Tony is back on Monday 8/29.

I, for one, am excited – even with the delay, my commutes have suffered during the absence!

I’m late to this read but it’s pretty good. I’d like to add that in my exchange with Chuck Sapienza he told me “Over the last 12 months we have seen an
increase in our radio listening. In order for our business model to work, we need people to enjoy our product on the radio or on the web when it originally airs. I am sure you understand the importance of sticking to your business model and for
that reason; unfortunately, we had to make this change.”

I read it again and it is somewhat cryptic, talking about listening and not ratings. But if there is an increase it seems that the podcast delay is not the answer to increasing the listenership. They clearly did no research to find out what was driving increase and made a knee-jerk reaction.

I think this is the episode that is turning the season towards how they promoted it – seems like everything is really getting going now and they’re upping the ante on action…I’m interested to see what is gonna happen with Jesse for sure.

I love when Walter busted into Jesse’s trashy little party and confronts him about how they plan to deal with the fallout from the murder of Gale (you can watch at http://vimeo.com/27637571 ). Great song, too (“Flyentology” by El-P) that is such an intense song for such an intense scene

Apparently a summary on AMC’s website stated it was Mike on the “Go home, Walter” call. But even that doesn’t convince me. I’ve rewatched the scene dozens of times — the voice is 100% NOT Mike’s, and 90% Gus’s. So I’m letting my ears guide me on this one and sticking with Gus as the guy making that call. Even if Vince Gilligan himself told me it was Mike, I’d kindly ask him to have Mike say his own line next time instead of Gus!

I agree with your column. WTEM doesn’t bother to update their web pages when Tony is not going to be there (which I can see why – I immediately change channel). I, probably like 99% of the people listening to the program are WORKING. So I like the podcast because, unfortunately I am not as well off as Tony, but I have to stop listening — WTEM doesn’t get it that the more you turn people away – the more they will go to another source and may not come back. I am hoping that WTEM would have Tony go back outside and do a live show, like when he was a Congressional in the heat. There is nothing more entertaining than Tony ranting .

I’d like to point out that Vin Baker used to take a shower between pre-game warm up and tip-off. That trade worked out well for the Sonics!

That’s interesting, I didn’t know union rules would preclude podcast ads. I’ll have to look into that. That would explain why the station itself is only allowed to advertise on podcasts with public-good or station-promos.

If advertising, or underwriting, or sale of podcast is impossibility, I still don’t think it siphons readers away from the terrestrial product. I think it’s two different markets, two different bases, and I predict they won’t see a boost in ratings. Also, why must the delay be a full 24 hours?
