Is no news good news? Not when you’re a Cubs fan.

… good news?

Not when you’re a Cubs fan, it is not.

The consensus among all crazed Cubs fans, bloggers, beat writers and front-office officials is that the Cubs’ no. 1 prime-cut free-agent break-the-bank target is Rafael Furcal. Even we endorse the signing of this two-time jailbird, even though we can’t imagine he’s really 27 years old.

While rumors in the Atlanta Journal Constitution (via BCB) and blurbs in the Chicago papers suggest a Furcal signing is imminent — I can’t believe that this ever-extending period before Raffy inks the deal is a good thing. For crying out loud, he’s taking in Hawks games with AJ (It’s nice they attempted to support the local Hawks before they went straight to Buck Head or even the Gold Club.)

The Cubs have made an offer,we know this, and the above-linked AP story, among others, may confirm that Furcal’s agent is simply but desperately trying to up the Cubs’ ante by pitting the Dodgers and Braves against the North Siders.

It also seems that if the Cubs are outbidding the Braves by so much — then what, exactly, should this hold-up be? Why is he waiting? The market is now established with Giles and Konerko now signing. Let’s get this done, already. And I’m not the only fretting Cubs blogger out here, so each day adds to the neuroses.

Still, comes now the perpetually-optimistic BCB to point out that a Furcal signing rumor is now circulating. Could it be? Pardon me if I attempt to refuse to hold my breath. (However, seriously, what the hell would I do without Bleed Cubbie Blue? I consider myself a rational Cubs fan, and that web site has saved me from early-morning suicide approximately 783 times. Praise be!)

One more Cubs note — I usually don’t dignify the inane View From a Cubs Fan feature the Trib posts, but today’s is extremely ridiculous. The Trib always trots in these uninformed, thin, ludicrous, outdated, or simply wrong opinions from whomever writes, in a vain attempt to hide the fact that their own corporate ownership empire is wholly inept in baseball matters. But Eddie from Schaumburg doesn’t like Milton Bradley, so you’ll excuse us if we choose not to trade for him! For crying out loud Eddie, Kerry Wood is always hurt, so you don’t want to go get Milton. Flawless logic.

The Winter Olympics are the worst. Lots of skating, not enough slalom skiing accidents.

And where’s the mention of Arrested Development getting cancelled? That’s a freaking national tragedy.
